Description : Embroidered in wool on canvas, mainly in grospoint but using other stitches in designs, and petit point for details; bands of different styles of alphabets, geometric designs, floral motifs; various designs, flowers, figures,birds, etc., shown in lower half of panel, including ecclesiastical symbols denoting that this was probably done in a convent school. A wreath of flowers in the lower half of the sampler holds the inscription "THERESA VALENCIA' JULIO 8, de 1782". Bound with green satin ribbon and mounted on fine beige cambric. Wooden frame with non-glare glass. Was tentatively appraised in 2005 for between $4000 and $40,000.
Commentaires : The ability to produce needlework of a high quality was a much desired expertise for a woman to possess. The original purpose of the sampler was to preserve and hand down special patterns to future generations of young women to practice and perfect. During the 18th- 19th centuries, the sampler was completed by schoolgirls as part of their formal learning and served to demonstrated their mastery of the alphabet and basic number system skills.
