Description : Music box made of wood with brown varnish outside and reddish inside. Crest with musical instruments at center on hinged cover; has a key and lock. Glass door insideshowing brass cylinder and spring with two levers on other end. Plays four different musical pieces. No marking. . The musical pieces it plays are 1) God Save The King; 2) There Is No Place Like Home; 3) Rule Britannia; 4) Unknown. Playing condition. This was a wedding gift to Thomas and Mary (Moore) Keillor.
Commentaires : The music box industry developed mainly in Switzerland because of its place as an historic center of clock making. The first type of music box to be produced in quantity was the cylinder music box, which had a rotating cylinder on which the music was imprinted. Along the surface of the cylinder were many tiny bumps. As the cylinder rotated it would come in contact with a comb which produced sounds according to the pattern. Music boxes were driven by springs and did not use electrical power. Cylinder music boxes were mainly for the affluent as they were finely crafted and only held a few songs. They were succeeded
