| Description : | This unfinished 'Crazy' quilt is comprised of 16 blocks made from various colours of fabrics being various sizes and shapes. There are various fabrics used, mostly silks and satins. Fabric pieces are sewn together onto a backing piece of white cotton and each seam is over-stitched with various decorative embroidery-like patterns. There are some pieces with additional embroidery of dates and initials (1911, 1912, 1913, Mar 1913, E J O, F H O). Several of the silk pieces have shattered. Being unfinished, there is no backing or binding, so it is an example of how this type of quilt was assembled. |
| Commentaires : | Crazy quilts were popular from the late 1800s through the early 1900s. They featured irregular shaped pieces of fabric sewn to a foundation fabric and then outlined with embroidery stitches. The most elaborate crazy quilts were made of silk satins and velvets and heavily embroidered with images of flowers and animals. More practical versions were made of cotton or wool, with a limited amount of embroidery. |
