Commentaires : Charles Scribner was born on February 21, 1821, in New York City and died on August 26, 1871, in Lucerne, Switzerland. In 1846, with Isaac D. Baker, he established the publishing firm Baker & Scribner. After Baker's death, full ownership was purchased from the Baker family and the firm was renamed Charles Scribner's Sons. After his death, the firm was headed by Scribner's three sons, John Blair, Charles II and Arthur Hawley Scribner, respectively. In 1984 Scribner - as it was then known - merged with Macmillian who were subsequently purchased by Simon and Schuster in 1998. As of 2001, Simon and Schuster are now part of the worldwide holdings of the Holtzbrinck Publishing Group, a privately-held company based in Stuttgart, Germany (March 2017.)
