History of Use: This collection of rugs was originally designed by Pegi Nicol MacLeod (1904-1949) who was the founder of the Arts Center at the University of New Brunswick. All seven rugs are hand hooked on burlap backings with the following designs: Aboriginal Girl, Thistle, Joe Pye Weed, Cloven, Pony, Chicken, and an unknown design. The rugs, originally designed by Nicol McLeod, were created by an unknown local craftswoman. These rugs were designed during a time of financial constraint for Nicol Macleod so she sold them to a local shop in Fredericton owned by Madge Smith. Pegi Nicol Macleod was a Canadian artist whose works had the ability to delight or offend its viewers. Although she was born in Listowel, Ontario, she frequented Fredericton, New Brunswick and was a fan of the vibrant art scene. Throughout her life and career, Pegi Nicol Macleod lived in Ottawa, Ontario; Toronto, Ontario; and New York, New York while annually returning to Fredericton. Primarily a painter, Nicol Macleod took ordinary scenes from her daily life and turned them into vibrant, colorful compositions. In 2016, the University of New Brunswick highlighted a number of Lucy Jarvis and Nicol Macleod`s work commemorating the founding of the Arts Center.
