Description: Silver cross with the letters R.G. overlayed in center and a double ended staff with crosses going through the letters. A wreath circles the cross. Maple leaves are on the bottom, left, and right of cross with a crown on top.
History of Use: The Memorial Cross, or referred to as the Silver Cross, was awarded to the mother, widow or next of kin to a Canadian who was a member of the Armed Forces who lost their life in active duty. The silver cross is chosen annually from the mothers or widowers who have received the medal. The medals are engraved with the name, rank, and service number of the son or husband who was killed. James Edward Stickels died on 09 October 1916 at the age of 18; his parents were James and Rebecca Stickels. This particular medal was awarded to the mother of James Stickles of Fredericton, New Brunswick as he was killed on active duty in the First World War. It appears that James Stickels` mother, Rebecca, detached the pin from the medal and put a chain on it to wear as a necklace. Typically, the medals were suspended by a bar brooch or from light purple ribbon. James Stickels was born on 31st December, 1897 in St. Mary`s York County, New Brunswick, his service number was 488293. Before he enlisted for active military service, he was a clerk in his home town of St Mary`s, York County which is now considered as a part of Fredericton. He enlisted on the 5th of August, 1915 at the age of 18 and reported for duty at Halifax on August 10th, 1915
