Description : | Symmetrical patterning on birch bark lid has a cross formation from corner to corner, and a stylized leaf pattern at either short end and a half circle on the long end. Sides of lid have a half and full diamond pattern and a square pattern done in white porcupine quills. The side patterning consists of a zig-zap of different coloured quills, some dyed blue, with a simple four petalled flower motif staggered between the peaks of this pattern. Background is woven fiber that is probably a type of grass. |
Commentaires : | The box was in the Marathon Hotel when purchased in the 1940s and resided there through the transition of three owners until it was donated to the Museum. It is not known how long it was in the hotel which was built by the sea captain James Pettes around 1850 (originally called Marble Ridge Hotel and located in Pettes Cove). The Passamaquoddy First Peoples, located in southern Maine and New Brunswick, made this box and are well known for their quill and basket weaving work. For thousands of years prior to European settlement they visited the island of Grand Manan seasonally. After settlement and prior to the 1950s their annual visits included selling their basket wares to the settlers. The island was used by them for fishing, hunting of seals and porpoise, and for gathering berries and sweet grasses. |
