Description : Picture - The stamp of the G. G. Flewwelling Manufacturing Co. on brown paper and has been framed. It shows the river, sawmill and the match factory. It is a advertisement for the "Superior Friction Matches".
Commentaires : Advertisement for "Superior Friction Matches" produced by the G. and G. Flewwelling Manufacturing Company, Hampton, Kings County, New Brunswick, 1862 -1916. The matches were extremely popular and sold throughout the Maritimes and the US, as well as in places as far away as Bermuda. The image for the advertisement is an engraving created by C.H. Flewwelling who started Flewwelling Press in Saint John (still in operation to date - 2012). The matches were commonly referred to as 'penny stinkers' because of the pungent odor of their chemical composition - a mixture of sulphur and white phosphorus. The matches were produced until 1914 when Canada introduced the "White Phosphorus Match Act" banning the use of white phosphorus. G. & G. Flewwelling tried other chemical compositions but could not find a suitable replacement for their formula and ceased match production in 1914. The company continued to produce boxes and cut lumber at their industrial complex but the loss of the match business and economic forces caused by World War I led the company to close its doors in 1918
