Description : Metal blade, length of blade: 30 cm., attached to a wooden handle. Handle holds blade in place with two brass rivets. Iron end on handle which fit into the bottom of the gun barrel by means of a mortise slot and locking ring. Written on blade "883" "WD Wilkimson London, VR, 9, '96
Commentaires : Boer War British Pattern 1888 Bayonet These bayonets were manufactured to fit the Pattern 1888 Lee-Metford Infantry Rifle. This particular bayonet bears Queen Victoria's royal cipher along with the War Department's approval stamp. It was manufactured by Wilkinson Company and was made in 1896. The bayonet was used by William H. Bryant in the Boer War. William H. Bryant was born at Bratford on Avon, England and came to Canada as a young boy settling in Norton, N.B. Following his service in South Africa he returned aboard the Idaho. He married Mamie Richardson of Waterford, Kings Co. on September 18th, 1901. William worked as a stone mason. In the Great War he enlisted in the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry and was killed at Ypres in 1915. He had three sons: Arthur, New Jersey, U.S.A., Charles, Norton and H. Russell, M.D., Sussex; and two daughters: Della Kierstead, and Elinor Gustavsen.
