Description : | Millstones come in pairs. The base or bedstone is stationary. Above the bedstone is the turning runner stone which actually does the grinding. The runner stone is supported by a cross-shaped metal piece fixed to a "mace head" topping the main shaft or spindle leading to the driving mechanism of the mill, water powered. The surface of the millstone is divided by deep grooves called furrows. Spreading away from the furrows are smaller grooves called feathering or cracking. This pattern is repeated around the millstone. When they are laid face to face the patterns mesh in a kind of "scissoring" motion creating the cutting or grinding function of the stones. Millstones need to be evenly balanced, and achieving the correct separation of the stones is crucial to producing good quality flour. The experienced miller will be able to adjust their separation very accurately. |
Commentaires : | William Redstone moved to Springfield Parish in 1836 along the Joliff Brook. Some land he purchased and some was leased from Trinity Church in 1837. Here he built two watermills, one a gristmill and the other a sawmill, both on the Joliff Brook. These mills were taken over by William Joliff, an Englishman, came to New Brunswick in the year 1830, a son-in-law to William Redstone. Mr. Joliff did very well with his mills until his interest turned to prospecting. Later this place became home to Thomas Marr who was the last to operate the mills. Later it became the property of the donor, William Tremain. Both these mills are marked on the H. F. Walling map of 1862. The millstone was procured through the efforts of Mr. Ernest Graham, Bull Moose Hill. |
