Description : | Eight gallon churn is beige in colour on the outside and dark brown on the inside. Surfaces are glazed. Churn has handles on two sides carved into the earthenware. Cover is glazed on the top surface only and has a hole 8 cm in diameter tapering to 3.5 cm through which the dasher handle fits. Dasher has a handle that is fit into rectangular wooden cross piece 19 cm by 5 cm which is connected to another wooden cross piece. Cover piece has four holes 1 cm in diameter. |
Commentaires : | Purchased by donor, Chris Maxwell, at a sale in Glenholme, Nova Scotia. Butter was made by the use of sweet cream put in churn and the action of the dasher moving up and down would turn the cream to butter. The liquid left would be buttermilk. The butter would be washed with cold water and salt would be worked into the butter. Sometimes yellow food colouring would be added but otherwise the butter would be pale in colour. |
