Commentaires : | Quilt making had its beginnings out of necessity but soon gained popularity as a means of expressing artistic talents as varying colours and shapes of material along with stitches produced works of art. The quilting craft which is so deeply rooted in Canadian culture involved many members of the family, from the men and boys making the wooden quilting frames and stands to the grandmother who often pieced quilts for busy mothers. Quilting parties or quilting bees became a social gathering for women who often lived far apart. Pioneer women treasured every scrap of material, however small and used and reused it until it literally disappeared. Pieced quilts were the most popular for they offered the most economical use of scrap material. |
