Description : On the front side the family tree 'sampler', there is a hand-written, hand-drawn depiction of the Steeves family record. The top left-hand side has an inscription enclosed within a rectangular frame that has small decorative triangles protruding from it. The triangles on the right-side are green, although it appears that someone may have gone over them with red marker. The triangles on the left side are blue, although this has also been gone over with some sort of red paint or ink. The bottom of the rectangle is painted with a black line. On top of the rectangular frame sits an elongated triangle that is split right down the middle. The left-side of the triangle is red and the right side is blue. On top of the triangle is a circle which is split down the middle vertically. The left-hand side is blue and the right side is yellow with some black marks inside. On top of the circle there is a floral design. This design layout is repeated on the opposite/right side of the sampler.  In between these two repeated design 'structures', there are three ovals with a heart on top. Each of these shapes is outlined by branches and leaves. On the left and right side of the heart are two large green branches with leaves and red flowers on the ends. Separating the top half of the sampler from the bottom half is a thick red line with five black dots in it. Underneath this line, there four different column headings for children, births, marriages and deaths. The entirety of this sampler is framed by a yellow line along each of the edges. Lastly there are two gold metal clamps on the top right and left corners.  On the back of the tree, there is an advertisement for Scottish Imperial Insurance.
Commentaires : This sampler depicts the familial record of Simon and Catherine Steeves, both of whom are direct descendants of Heinrich Stief and Reginia 'Rachel' Stahleker. Heinrich and Rachel were among the eight original Pennsylvania German immigrant families who settled in the Moncton area in 1766. Heinrich and Rachel were both born in Germany but immigrated to Pennsylvania with the hopes of establishing a family and livelihood in the New World. It is here that they lived and had their seven sons. However, due to mounting unrest in the United States and an exploding population, the Stief family made the decision to travel north to New Brunswick for a more suitable homestead. Arriving on the boat 'The Lovey', Heinrich and Rachel struggled for several years before settling and establishing a prosperous farm in Hillsborough. Simon and Catherine, great-grandchildren of Heinrich and Rachel, were second cousins and spent the first half of their lives working as farmers in Hillsborough. It is here that their children,  Gilbert, Susannah, Sarah Elizabeth, and Margaret, were born. In 1852, the family moved to Salisbury Parish and established a new home and farm. It is here that Catherine gave birth to the remainder of their children, Stephen Alfred, Abram Ansley, Desbrisay Cyrus, Hiram Watson, Wealthy Ann, and Orpha Jane. In 1866, just four years after the birth of Orpha Jane, Simon died and Catherine and her children left the farm to live with W.S. Constantine, a local clerk. The creator of this sampler is unknown (possibly created by the Elisabeth Brown, first wife of Abraham Steeves.). However, according to the donor it is known that this sampler was once in the possession of Catherine Steeves. Following her death, it would have been passed on to her youngest daughter, Orpha Jane.  The family name 'Steeves' derives from the original German name 'Stief'.
