| Description : | A metal artillery shell that is primarily brown in coloring. It has a circular base and a cylindrical shape that narrows slightly towards the top of the shell. A bronze stripe rims the shell approximately two centimeters from the base, and a gold stripe rims the very top. The top of the shell has approximately 1.7 centimeters of hollow space that ends with a base containing a medium-sized hole in the center. A small hole is present in the bronze rim. The shell is covered in miniscule, textured stripes. On the reverse side of the hole in the bronze rim is an inscription in typewriter-like text. |
| Commentaires : | Private Thomas Francis was a member of the 145th Overseas Battalion Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) Peter was born on High Street in Moncton, New Brunswick on August 5, 1894. He was the twin of Elizabeth Francis and the son of Thomas Henry Francis, a night watchman, and Elizabeth Park (Earnshaw) Francis. He lived on Lutes Mountain, Bonnells Corner, New Brunswick, and enlisted at age 21 on January 15, 1916 in Moncton, New Brunswick upon which he was declared fit for service. He was killed in action in the field in France or Beligum on October 30 or 31, 1917. |

The First World War experienced the modern shell, which was more streamlined than shells of the nineteenth century. In some cases, this increased shell range by 95%.
