Higgins & co., specifying the business's dealings and having a space to record a date. The remainder of the page's front and back sides is covered with black script with some holes and smudges. |
| Commentaires : | This letter is part of a series of eleven written by Lester Higgins to Willard Higgins dating between 1878 and 1882. Lester was born in Wallace, Nova Scotia in 1860 and came to Moncton with his parents around the age of six. At the age of 19, he started a retail boot and shoe business at the corner of Main and Pearl Street. Two years later, he added a wholesale shoe department to his retail store. In 1901, he built the first section of the Higgins Block on the corner of Main and Botsford Streets. In 1923, he retired from the shoe business to concentrate on his real estate business.In addition to his years in the shoe business in Moncton, he operated a shoe store in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia for over thirty years and a store in Halifax, Nova Scotia for 15 years. He also purchased the Redden Shoe factory in Yarmouth Nova Scotia in 1905 and ran it until 1911 when the building was burnt. Higgins was known as a man who did much to contribute to Moncton's welfare; his funeral at his residence, Shadowlawn, was largely attended. |
