Description : a cast-iron, mechanical food chopper or "hasher" mounted on a 1 1/4 in. thick hardwood base with the original green paint. the chopper bowl rotates as the iron crank is turned causing the chopper blade fixed inside the bowl to go up and down. the inner base of the chopping bowl is wood and is well-worn. according to the article "the hasher" in the dec., '58 chronicle a machine identical to ours was patented on may 23, 1865 by leroy s. starrett of newburgport, mass. in the original patent, this device was called an "improved meat cutter". a "hasher" identical to our model is pictured on p. 57 of johnson's article. leroy s. starrett was born in 1836 in china, maine. the "hasher" was his first invention. after marketing his invention peddler-fashion for several years, starrett and a mr. hill formed the athol machine and foundry co., in athol,mass. and marketed the hasher. there were seven different numbered choppers manufactured at the factory: numbers 401-407. the model which resemble
