Commentaires : Railways are well noted for their use of time and clocks that kept precise time, especially in their early days as they had no other methods to ensure that they knew precisely where their trains were along often busy rail lines. The operational needs of trains led to the change from dozens of local times to standardize times. Since railways operated on fixed rail lines with sidings and yards built for meets, etc., they needed clocks, especially at the various control points that were reliable so they could with daily time checks know that all the clocks in their region were showing the same time. Since train crews were required to check their personal pocket watches against the station clocks, these clocks displayed a card showing just how many seconds the clock was off. One spin-off from this was that the Railway's clock was also used by the general public to check their own watches. Railways searched out clock makers that made clocks that would meet their demanding criteria. One of the better known makers was the Seth Thomas Clock Company, the maker of this clock.
Fonctions : This large wall clock was used in the Canadian National Railway Station at Campbellton, NB, or one of the larger stations under Campbellton's jurisdiction. Canadian National Railways Vice-President, Mr. David Blair, with the able assistance of Mr. Edward Arsenault arranged to have this clock donated to the Moncton Model Railroad Association. When organizational changes were made in the Model Association, CRHA member, Mr. Clarence Price was charged with finding another Charitable Organization to become the home for this valuable Railway Artefact. His selection was the Canadian Railroad Historical Association's operation in Hillsboro. After spending several years hiding in the Railroad's former Baggage Car Ticket Office, Mr. Ken Parker of Hillsborough donated numerous hours of careful and patience work restoring the mechanical functions of this clock so that today it can be put on display for the enjoyment and education of our visitors.
