Description : Unmarked caboose marker lamp, metal cube with blue lenses to transmit light from an interior light source.
Commentaires : Caboose marker lamps were hung on the back of rolling stock to indicate the end of the train. Light was transmitted through the coloured panes of glass via an interior light source. By the 1830s, lamps and lanterns had become essential to the railroad industry. Within a decade, manufacturers were creating products which exhibited artistic merit by creating personalized lighting pieces which were also pleasing to the eye. Before 1855, when lighting equipment started to be mass produced, local blacksmiths, tinsmiths and coppersmiths produced headlamps, marker lamps and hand-held lanterns for locomotives. During the period from 1880 until the 1930s, lamp and lantern manufacturers produced "presentation" items which were not used in practice, but specifically for special occasions to honour the accomplishments of railroad people. These gifts were given along with or in lieu of the traditional "gold watch" in recognition of one's retirement from the railroad service.
Fonctions : It is unknown whether this lamp was used in the railway service, but it was presented to Hudson Sears upon his retirement in 1980 from the Canadian National Railway in Sackville, New Brunswick.
