| Description : | This is a medal with a grayish metal coin and red ribbon with a dark blue stripe in the center running vertically. The coin has the profile of King George VI on one side and a reclining human figure on the other. |
| Commentaires : | This is an Imperial Service Medal which was the lower level of the Imperial Service Order, an award within the British Commonwealth. The order was created in 1902 and was awarded to public service workers within the British Commonwealth for 25 years of good service. The upper level award was simply the Imperial Service Order and the recipients had the right to add the letters "I.S.O." after their names. The Imperial Service Medal was intended for non-managerial employees. The Medal was struck with the profile of the reigning monarch on one side. The inclusion of the title "INDIAE IMP" in the royal titles of King George VI indicates the medal was made earlier than 1948, as the title of Emperor of India was deleted after India's independence. |
| Fonctions : | The Faithful Service Medal was awarded to Frank Frost Cuthbertson sometime between 1930 and 1940. He was from St. George and settled in the Humphrey area, near what is known as the Urban (Urbane?) Corral. Frank was a moulder by trade working for Fawcett, casting stoves near the Eaton site, near Foundry Street, Moncton New Brunswick. He began for the Intercolonial Railroad ICR?, and likely worked in the freight shed in McKee's Mills. Among other things, he was chosen to shunt the King's Private Car in the CN Moncton Station during the 1939 tour. As for the medal, some time in during the above dates, he was ordered to a train to Riverside-Albert. The model of the engine was small and, probably, the little wheels behind the cow-catcher were small. This was well-known in the day. A terrible blizzard ensued before the mixed train left Moncton. By the time the train got on the south side of Hillsborough, everything was blocked. The tendency was for the accumulated snow between the rails was to skew those little driving rails upward. Generally, putting the locomotive in reverse could pull the wheels to re-rail, but as the snow was so deep, nothing was going anywhere. The train had plenty of coal, and, possibly, extra coal car. Frank did not abandon his engine but rather kept the steam alive by shoveling snow into the tender at intervals when necessary. Likely, the story grew as the time lengthened, but 36 hours is routinely mentioned when the stories were told. He got 10 merit points for the job and a letter from the super. |
