Commentaires : Acquired by the Town of St. Andrews, May 1946. Purchased in St. Andrews. Mrs. Kelly says this piece was given to Rev. Ross by Count Thebault of St. Andrews. In the black inventory book of Henry Phipps Ross "67 UH C7 Case 13 x 68 x 17 6 shelves Two hinged doors, one (middle) sliding door. Mounted on writing table 22-1/2 x 70 x 32-1/4 eight legs. (Mahogany - Gothic and rectangular windowes - mostly veneer, pieces of veneer, cornice, fans, and beading missing, in general good condition - one glass cracked. Bought of Jules Thebaud of St. Andrews May 18 1923 for $130.00. Said to have come to Thebaud from Father O'Flaherty; to him, Minnie Keay says, from the Parkers who had it for many years in the house, now occupied by McColls, opposite All Saints House. Thought by Miss Keay - corroborated by Mr Howe--to have come originally from Saint John and very like made by the Laurence Bros, Cabinet Maker about 1810-1820, and out of a Senior Parker Brother's Saint John home. Renovated by Albyn Emery autumn of 1912. Central drawer supplied with slip-lid for writing, and left hand lower drawer partitioned by him)." Mr. Ross valued the desk bookcase highly. Mr. Emery explained he did not do this work but the beading on the desk-bookcase is made by putting two pieces of wood on the lathe only six inches long. You turn the piece, but before you turn it you put three pieces of wood together with brown paper between and these are chiseled apart, after turning. Henry Phipps Ross and Sarah Juliette Ross, the American benefactors of the Ross Memorial Museum were avid collectors both on their world travels and locally when they were at their summer estate, Rossmont, near St. Andrews, New Brunswick. They made many of their purchases of furniture between 1902 (when they bought Rossmont) and 1914. Arthur Senna, who worked on the estate often searched for antiques for them, sometimes going as far as Halifax. Henry and Juliette also scoured the countryside in and around St. Andrews themselves, buying directly from local residents. Henry's diary shows just how keen they were about collecting and researching their finds. "1912 Feb. 24, sofa table and chairs come & we go into ecstasies over them....Feb. 25 We read up on Chippendale, Hepplewhite & Sheraton... Mar. 14 Arthur comes at noon...he displays his plunder of samovar, tea kettles & describes purchases-sideboard, etc." None of the furniture attributed to Thomas Nisbet in the Ross collection is labelled by Nisbet but many experts have looked at the pieces over the years and believe them to be by Nisbet.
