Description : | Black and white photograph. House at Rossmont estate.Chamook, New Brunswick, near Saint Andrews. |
Commentaires : | Acquired by the Town of Saint Andrews, New Brunswick, May 1946, as part of the collection of Henry Phipps Ross (1867-1945) and Sarah Juliette Ross (1868-1945) who were the Ross Memorial Museum's benefactors. After their deaths, the Mr. and Mrs. Ross left a very generous legacy to the Saint Andrews area of the Ross Memorial Museum which holds their collection, the Ross Memorial Library, and a wing on a local hospital. They also left a large bequest to the Friends Meeting of Washington, DC. The Rosses were an American couple who bought an estate, which they called Rossmont, outside of Saint Andrews, New Brunswick, in 1902, where they spent several months of each year. The Rosses did much of their enthusiastic antique collecting prior to the First World War in the Saint Andrews area. They also went further afield to find fine early furniture (including many pieces by New Brunswick cabinetmakers of the early 19th century) in Saint John, Halifax and surroundings. Great travellers, they also collected artifacts from around the world: 1919 automobile trip from Saint Andrews, New Brunswick to California, 1921-22 Europe and North Africa; 1925 'round-the world' cruise on the Carinthia, a 1937 cruise around the Orient and another long trip through Africa in 1939. Henry Ross was an Episcopalian minister who had parishes in Taunton, Massachusetts and Providence, Rhode Island and in Palo Alto, California from 1907-9 when he retired from active ministry. Juliette was the daughter of a wealthy New York family. Her father, Charles Finney Clark, was the president of the Bradstreet Company which became Dun and Bradstreet. in 1931, Henry and Juliette became Quakers and accepted full membership in the Friends Meeting of Washington DC. In 1938, the Rosses purchased a fine brick Georgian house in the centre of Saint Andrews to be a museum for their collection after their deaths. In 1945, Henry died. After collapsing at his funeral, Juliette died a few days later. |
