A floral design, in two identical halves is embossed on the sides of the dome in three places. Each half consists of a petal like curlicue with a smaller curlicue protruding at an angle downwards from the curl of the first curlicue. Three lobes are embossed on the upper side of the stem of the small curlicue. A light bulb shaped hole in the top of the dome serves to hold the stove cover 985.02.02 in place. Pot hole covers 985.02.03.-04. are located here. A stove pipe hole is located in the top of the stove. It is oval in shape. A nickle plated rim 6.0cm in height fits around the body of the heater below the domed upper surface. It curves out and downward from where it is screwed to the heater forming an overhang around the heater. A nickel plaque is screwed to the centre front of the body of the heater below the nickle rim. The plaque is rectangular in shape with a slight indentation on both sides, rounded corners (the two lower corners are more rounded than the upper corners), a protrusion of two curlicues, back to back on the lower edge and two lobe-like extensions beside each other in the centre of the upper side. A curlicue is embossed in each corner of the plaque. The 'tails' from the upper two curlicues form the upper branches of a Christmas tree-like decoration in the upper centre of the plaque. 'B18' is embossed in the lower centre. Below the plaque is a window hole, it is basically square with with a convexly rounded upper side. An identical window hole is located on either side of thge central one. Each window hole is surrounded by an embossed line which forms a rectangle around the window. A stylized lily is embossed in each top corner of the rectangle. Eight screw heads are located equidistant around the inside of the rectangle. Two protrusions with round holes on one side of the window hole form a support and half of the hinge of the windows. The body of the heater widens slightly below the rectangle around the heater. The area below the rim narrows and has vertical grooves around its circumference. A nickel plated plaque is attached to the upper surface of the rim. It reads 'RETORT OAK'. 'DOMINION STOVE CO.'and 'PENETANG ONT' are embossed on the rim on either side of the plaque. A bell shaped nickel plated ornament (possibly a foot rail) is attached to the lower surface of the lip. The upper part of the bell is latticed with a repeated motif of curlicue with three bars joining the inner curl of the curlicue to the outer curl. The rim of the bell is solid and resembles the rim around the upper part of the heater. A plaque on the back of the heater near the base reads 'PATENTED SEPT 27, 1881.'; Metal, Iron; height 92 cm; top diameter 65 cm |
