Description: WOMAN'S PETTICOAT: Fine cotton. White. The waistband on this petticoat is 2.5cm wide. There is a handworked horizontal button hole at one end. A white ribbon tie is sewn to the right end of the button hole. The opposite end of the wistband also has a ribbon tie sewn to it. The petticoat has a centre back opening slit. The petticoat is gored, that is it is made from seven panels of material which enlarge from top to bottom. A band of 'lace' is sewn to the lower 7.0cm of the petticoat. It is made up of vertical bars between two horizontal bands. The vertical bars alternate. One is 0.8cm wide and made of starched lawn. The other bar is made of starched lace and is 1.2cm wide. The spaces between the bars are approx. 1.0cm wide. The upper horizontal band is starched lawn. The lower horizontal band is the same, except it has a ribbon embroidered with a leaf like running stitch sewn to it. A lace flounce is attached to the lower edge of the petticoat. It consists of seven bands; the first is machine worked laced with a chain pattern, followed by a band of starched material with the embroidered ribbon described above sewn to it; another band of chain pattern lace, a band of starched lawn with diagonal tucks 0.3cm wide and 2.2cm apart, a third band of the chain pattern lace, a second band of the lawn with diagonal tucks and a fourth band of chain pattern lace. A lace ruffle with eyelet holes and a scalloped lower edge is attached to the last band of lace. A second flounce is attached to the inside, of the skirt of the petticoat 33.0cm below the waistband. It consists of alternating bands of lawn and lace, all of which are starched. The lace is machine made and has a floral pattern. The first band of lawn is gathered along the top edge and is 14.5cm wide. The five bands of lace are 3.8cm wide. The second band of lawn is 3.8cm wide, as are the remaining three bands. A ruffle is attached top the bottom of the flounce. It consists of a band of starched lawn gathered along the upper edge, and a band of lace attached to the lower edge of the lawn. The lace is machine made and has two bands with flower motif alternated with two solid bands with an embroidered chain motif. The lower edge of the lace is outlined by a scalloped band in the lace.
