Description : PLANE - Possibly a dado or a bench plane. It is larger than the description of a dado plane given in Dictionary of Tools and does not have a rebate along the left side. It is the size of a bench plane but same has an escapement in the top of the plane and this plane has one on the side. Made of wood and metal. Includes cutting iron and wedge 0985.0006.0188 and 0189. It is a rectangular block of wood flat on all sides and ends. A handle is mounted on the top approx. 5.0cm from the back end. It is an open handle. The handle is flat on the sides and rounded on the front and back. The upper end curves forward. The top of the handle is flat but curved and forms a lip at the back edge, which fits over the area between the thumb and index finger. The edges of the upper half of the plane are chamfered. The upper back corner is rounded. There are four fingernail shaped notches in the plane, 2 on each side, opposite each other, approx. halfway up the plane at each end. See op. cited pg. 338 for further info. on notches. A hole runs through the plane from top to bottom. It widens to go through thye width of the lower half of the plane. It is shaped top accommodate the cutting iron and wedge, ie it is wedge shaped. A shaving outlet is located in the plane in front of and joined to the wedge hole. The outlet is basically a hole through the width of the stock tapering from the left side to the right side of the plane forming a cone. A metal bar is set into each side of the plane . Each bar is slightly taller than the plane, extending 1.5cm above the plane and 0.2cm below the plane. The bar on the left side is 3.0cm from the front of the plane and the one on the right is 7.5cm from the front of the plane. The bars sit at a right angle from vertical inclined towards the back of the plane, the bars taper slightly from top to bottom. A groove for a third bar is located on the left side of the plane. The following information is imprinted in the front end of the plane, ' UNION FACTORY WARRENTED H. CHAPIN' 'NO. 160' and '3' are imprinted in the back of the plane. MEASUREMENTS: 17.8cm x 40.6cm x 5.0cm.
