Description : Metal shank, wood handle. The wood handle is cylindrical in shape. Both ends of the body of the cylinder are rounded but the ends are flat. A narrow line is carved around the circumference of the centre of the handle. 'N-4' and 'J. SPRING' are imprinted in the handle. The shank or blade of the gimlet resembles a large nail. One end of the shank is inserted into, the wooden handle giving a 'T' shape to the gimlet. A round brass plate is soldered to the upper end of the shank where it comes through the handle. The other end of the shank has a screw like threaded point with a spiral groove above the screw point. Gimlets are miniature augers for boring small holes 1 8 to 3 8 inch in diameter as pilot holes for screws nails etc. The gimlet makes a hole by first squeezing the material apart and then it side cuts the material.
