Description : SAW - A small saw with a beechwood handle. This saw has been described as a flooring saw by the donor and a homemade tenon saw, made from a handsaw by the conservator. The blade of this saw is 12 cm wide at the handle and 26.2 cm along the toothed edge. The toe end of the blade is flat and almost perpendicular to the toothed edge for 1.9cm. The rest of the blade at the toe end angles towards the handle over 10.9cm. This section of the toe has teeth (which explains why the donor considered it a flooring saw). '11' is stamped in one side of the blade near the handle. The end of the blade fits into a slot in the handle. Three gold coloured rivets attach the blade to the handle. The heads of the three rivets have screwdriver slots on one side. Two of the rivets have plain heads on the other side. The third is larger than the others. .2.1 cm in diameter and indented '*H. DISSTON & SONS 8 PHJILADA.' is embossed in a circle around this rivet. A trade mark consisting of a set of scales below an indescernible figure, enclosed in a double line box is encircled by the ring. The handle of the saw is made of wood and is ornately carved. The handle is closed, that is, the hole through which the hand is placed is not open at the bottom. The hole is oval in shape with a decorative lobe carved into the lower edge next to the blade. The upper and lower parts of the hand grip have decorative 'fish tail' projections. Lines are engraved in one surface of the handle forming a leaf - like design. The wood in the upper fish - tail is chipped.; Metal, Steel; height 12 cm; length 35.5 cm
