Description : | One wooden trunk, solid plank construction with dovetailed corners, covered in painted leather decorated with brass studs with attached hinged lid, one metal handle on either end, leather on all sides except the bottom and painted with decorative floral motif on four sides (top, sides and front), back is painted blue/green similar background color overall with flowers and trim in white and red, integral keyed lock at front, metal/iron handle on the p.r. side appears to be a newer addition, handle on p.l. side is brass, internal lid chain is missing, leather sewn at seam around lid, remnants of label on top with four square nails and remnants of adhesive labels on p.l. side. |
Fonctions : | Trunk belonged to Joseph Mc Kay, the first European sent to work in Nanaimo by the Hudson Bay Company. The trunk is said to have come from either from Hong Kong in 1849 or Ansonia Connecticut according to information in the file, and first belonged to Mr. Mc Kay's mother. According to letter in file the trunk came to San Francisco from Hong Kong in 1849 and on to Victoria in 1858 and presumably on to Fort Kamloops in the 1860's. |
