| Fonctions : | Made and used on the Alexander Farm, now the site of the Halton Region Museum. Iron parts were likely made in the Farm's blacksmith shop which was constructed in 1880. This type of apple dryer would be placed above a heat source, such as a stove to dry the fruit. Large quantities of apples were cored, peeled and dried for use during the winter months. From 1836 until 1961, four generations of farmers worked the land that is now the Museum site. Self-sufficiency and innovation were prized by the family. Each generation was named Adam Alexander but it was Adam Alexander III (1852-1941) who left the most interesting legacy. Adam III was an ingenious man who harnessed power from a spring-fed reservoir on the top of the Niagara Escarpment cliffs above the Farm. In 1898, when most farms still used kerosene lighting and machinery powered by hand or by horse, Adam III piped water from the reservoir to two water turbines installed in the barn and house. With the power generated by these turbines he operated farm machinery including a fanning mill, circular saw, root pulper and hay carrier. The household used water power to operate domestic machinery including a washing machine, cream separator, butter churn and meat chopper. Several years later, with the addition of a dynamo to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy, the system was used for lighting. |
