Description : Dress of dark blue taffeta print with gold lines forming a box pattern. One piece dress with long wide sleeves. Three elaborate blue and black bead buttons remaining. Bodice is sewn to skirt and has hook and eye fasteners down the front. It is decorated with large braided buttons down the front and a zig-zag pattern of braid on the sleeves.

Detailed Description: Bodice Seams - pressed open. Seam finishes – none. Stitches - machine lock stitch with a lot of hand stitching. Boning - bone pockets over front darts, bones are missing, pockets have been hand sewn on. Fitting devices - four darts in front, back has two seams curving from armholes. Waist - bodice attached to waistband with hand stitching, piping at hem of bodice, slightly pointed at front. Lining - brown glazed plain weave cotton, treated as one in the front of the bodice. Sleeve - tight at top, 60 cm. wide at bottom, bottom lined with blue satin, zig-zag shape edged with braid diagonally across sleeve to wrist, shoulder seam dropped 7 cm. to back. Sleeve cap - no gathers, piping. Cuff – none. Collar - round, lower than normal, piping at edge. Opening - straight, 11 hooks and eyes, three decorative buttons remain, blue floss covered with black beads in centre in flower shape, piece of blue braid under buttons. Skirt Seams - pressed open. Seam finishes – none. Stitches - machine lock stitch and hand stitching. Lining - separate from skirt, brown glazed plain weave. Waist - waistband is of lining. Fitting devices - knife pleats facing centre front, two large box pleats in centre back, skirt made in eight straight sections. Pocket - on right side seam of skirt. Opening - now in front, lower end is a raw edge, original back opening is hidden by box pleats. Support structure – bustle. Hem - blue braid which is visible on the right side. Measurements: Waist - bodice 60 cm., skirt 60 cm., Skirt length - front 106 cm., back 118 cm., Hem width - 420 cm.

This dress was altered from an earlier two-piece dress. The original back opening has been covered and a front opening has been cut in the fabric. The fabric width is 50.5 cm. plus seam allowances.
Fonctions : Wedding dress worn by Marion Louisa Freed at her marriage to Oliver Livingstone. Wedding took place in Waterdown. The bodice is in 1850s style. The skirt has had the waistband opening moved from the back to the front. New pleats have been created in the back of the skirt to allow for the wearing of a bustle. The bustle gained popularity during the 1870s. This dress is made with silk fabric and is fully lined with cotton.
