Description : A professional black and white photograph of Grace Cawthra Elliot. The photo is round, mounted in a squared mat. The portrait is formal, the view silhouette from the back proper left. The subject is a young woman perhaps 18 years old; her expression is serious, almost sad. Her hair is arranged in a soft up do held with an ornamental clip at the crown. Her necklace is a single strand of pearls. Her dress has puffy shoulders with little fabric bows. The fabric appears to be white net with small flocked dots like 'dotted Swiss'. It is gathered at the centre back. The mat is impressed in script on lower proper left : _Lambert Weston & Son, Folliestone_. In pencil near the top centre of the mat back is _75916_.
Fonctions : Grace Cawthra Elliot (1878-1974) was the daughter of Henry Cawthra, a wealthy Toronto entrepreneur. In 1926, she had the Cawthra Estate house commissioned for herself and her new husband, Major General Harry Cawthra-Elliot on the lands that the Cawthra family had acquired in 1808. The house was built to suit the elegant and high class taste of the prominent family. Major General Cawthra Elliot passed away in 1949, while Grace Cawthra Elliot passed away in 1974 and the estate, which had no heirs was purchased by the City of Mississauga.
