Description : Glazed earthenware spaniel dog ornament made at Owen Sound, Ontario Function: It likely had a matching dog posed in the opposite direction, so they could be displayed on a mantelpiece? This ornament emulates British-made pottery dogs, but in a more primitive fashion. -The figure was moulded, and then its glaze would have been applied later on. The ears, eyes, nose and mouth and collar and claws of the dog were decorated in primitive brushstrokes of dark brown on the buff/yellow glaze. -No maker's mark is present on this piece. The company did not mark its pieces much.
Commentaires : Staffordshire dogs" or pottery dogs were once very popular items for households. It is not known how many were made, or what the production dates were. The donor reported that this ornament was made in an Owen Sound pottery shop, c. 1880-1890. Its original owner was Mrs. James Hutton (nee Rachel Stewart). She later became Mrs. John George Mackey. The donor's father was James H. Hutton. Mr. Mackey's sister married George Holmes of Owen Sound (an Owen Sound photographer). In 1991, a collector contacted Grey Roots Museum & Archives regarding a similar dog ornament that was also made at the Owen Sound Pottery. He stated that this pottery had its own distinctive style, and that items like it are well-documented (the ROM has published photo examples of items made at the pottery). Fonctions : The donor suggested that this pottery dog was moulded at the Owen Sound Pottery Co. in the 1880s. The Royal Ontario Museum also has an example. The Owen Sound Pottery Co. has been described as being in operation between 1895-1907. The donor's mother was formerly Miss Rachel Stewart. She became Mrs. James H. Hutton (the donor's father was James H. Hutton) and later became Mrs. John George Mackey. Rachel was the original owner of the pottery dog.
