| Description : | White point lace & Battenburg lace mat for a photograph frame, late 19th-c? Function: The previous owner said that this lace item was used to decoratively surround a photograph in a frame. The lace is white and needle-made. Centrally there is an oval space. It might have originally been intended to have a fabric oval sewn inside it in order to make it into a doily or it's original function may always have been that of a photograph mat? There is no maker's identification on the piece. |
| Fonctions : | This item was handworked by Mrs. Robert Frizzell (nee Ethel Eliza Heming) of Grey County, Ontario. This item was an heirloom formerly kept by the donor's stepmother, Mrs. Alice Gertrude Langton (b. 1905-d.1993). Mrs. Langton was formerly Alice Gertrude Frizzell, and her parents were Robert and Ethel (Heming) Frizzell of Bognor, Ontario. Mrs. Langton's mother Ethel Heming was a descendant of the William Dayman family of Bognor and some ladies from the Dayman family were also accomplished lacemakers. Ethel Eliza Heming was born May 30, 1866 and died on Sept. 14, 1948. She married Robert Frizzell in 1897. Her parents were Mr. and Mrs. Charles Heming. Her husband, Robert Frizzell (b. July 28, 1859-d. Aug. 18, 1942), was the eldest son of David Frizzell Sr. of Sydenham Twp. |
