| Description : | This is a green-grey Quaker bonnet. Along the top of the bonnet are two main gathered panels, divided by a pleated band that has been tacked on by hand. Along the bottom there is a frill which would probably cover the neck. The left back of the bonnet has two reddish coloured stains. There is a smooth surfaced, circular shaped piece of cloth attached to the back. On the left side there are four stains. The bonnet is tied with two long ribbons. On the inside of the bonnet, around the outside edge, there are three rows of lace. Beside this lace is a strip of beige lining. Along the inside of the frill at the back of the neck, there is a double layer of netting. Inside there is a coarse, heavy interfacing. It has been hand stitched. It appears to have been completely lined at one point, but now, only a few frayed fragments remain. |
| Commentaires : | This bonnet belonged to Mary James Gould. The bonnet is part of a larger display of artifacts that illustrate the Quaker heritage of the Uxbridge area. Mary James (1816-1891), the daughter of Ezekiel James of Quaker Hill, married Joseph Gould in 1839. Joseph Gould was a prominent Uxbridge politician, business man and entrepreneur. He represented Uxbridge and Scott townships on the Home District Council, was the first provincial warden of Ontario County and the first Reeve of the Village of Uxbridge. He was a member of the old parliament of United Canada and served several terms for Northern Ontario. [From Ball, L.
