Commentaires : | Joseph Gould (1808 - 1886) of Uxbridge, a leader of the Rebellion, was arrested December 13, 1837, jailed in Toronto (first in the Legislative Council chamber and later in the jail), moved to Fort Henry at Kingston, and in October was pardoned on providing sureties for good behaviour for three years. Gould later married Mary James, a daughter of Ruth (Lundy) James to whom the box is inscribed. [ From Raible, C., Carter, John. C., and Withrow, D. Translittération de l'inscription : | Top: A present to Ruth James from Joseph Gould, whilst confined in Toronto Gaol for High Treason, July 19th, 1838. Side front: A few seem favorites of fate, In pleasure's lap carest; Yet think not all the rich and great, Are likewise truly blest; But oh what crowds in every land, Are wretched and forlorn, Thro' weary life this lesson learn, That man was made to mourn. Side back: Many and sharp the numerous ills In woven with our frame! More pointed still we make ourselves, Regret, remorse, and shame! And man, whose heav'n erected face, The smiles of love adorn, Man's inhumanity to man; Makes countless thousands mourn! |
