Description : | This canoe is a replica of the well-known "Canot du Nord" or "North Canoe" used during the fur trade era. Winter bark (birchbark harvested in cooler seasons) has been used to build this canoe and to create the dark brown floral designs along the hull. In order to create the designs, the outside of the bark was moistened and the rough, reddish-brown winter bark or inner rind scraped away leaving only the desired pattern. Following the collection of the necessary materials, the canoe was built over a two-month period. |
Fonctions : | Cesar Newashish was born in Lake Manawan in the Atikamekw Nation on December 18 1902. He built his first canoe at the age of 40 after a lengthy period of learning by observation. Due to his appreciation and respect for the Atikamekw traditions he taught family members the art of birchbark canoe building. His work and the process of birchbark canoe building were chronicled in the National Film Board film titled: Cesar's Bark Canoe. |
