| Description : | Eastlake style rocking chair; walnut, dark stained, original horsehair covering, carved crest rail has inlaid burl design, 41.5cm x 8.5cm, attached carved leaf design on side arms, arms 28cm x 6.5cm, side braces from back of seat, carved scroll pattern on front of chair, 5 covered buttons on back cushion, brown gimp, rocker cradle, box has large metal springs. |
| Commentaires : | One piece of a parlour set of six. Horse hair fabric was used to upholster furniture with as it was harder and stiffer than other fabrics and could be dyed with dye suitable for protein fibers. Horse hair upholstered fabrics were used by the wealthier classes. It had an understated elegance, silky sheen and high durability. It was the middle of the eighteenth century when weaving fabric with horse hair was first started. It was first used to make better use of local products. The Eastlake style is named after Charles L. Eastlake (1833-1906), an English architect who wrote Hints on Household Taste in Furniture, Upholstery, and Other Details, published in 1868. The book was reprinted in America in 1872 and became so popular that it required six editions within eleven years. In his book, Eastlake promotes a peculiar kind of furniture and interior decoration that was angular, notched and carved, and deliberately opposed to the curved shapes of French Baroque Revival Styles such as the Second Empire. Traditionally, furniture makers imitated architectural forms, but Eastlake reversed this process. Eastlake houses had architectural ornamentation that had copied the furniture inside the house. |
