| Description : | Oil on board; 34.5cm x 29 cm; portrait of Dorothy Cochrane Macphail, daughter of Sir Andrew Macphail, at age of 5 years; in mourning dress after the death of her mother in 1902; frame is in French style, 1904-1920, wood, plaster and gold, with carvings at four corners, 53.5 cm x 48.5 cm; signed upper left, dark brown paint "A.L." (Alphonse Jongers); verso label in middle top as follows: "Hunter 1.0534, Restored 61 John Muhl, "Restored from the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, 5230 West Hill Ave, Montreal" handwritten. |
| Commentaires : | Alphonse Jongers, born 1872 Mezieres, France, died 1945. His fee ranged from $3000 to $5000 but he painted many of his friends for nothing. He lived at the Ritz Carlton in 1929, then, after the stock market crashed he had to move out. He did return in later years to live there until his death at age 72.
