Description : This carbide lamp has a base made of brass and measures 9.9 cms from top to bottom. The base of the lamp has a black plastic ring around it, while the front of the lamp has a circular piece of concave steel attached to reflect the light to maximize the lamps efficiency. Like the seal oil lamp, the carbide lamp also has a hook on the back so that it can be worn on the miner's helmet, rather then be carried in their hands.
Commentaires : This carbide lamp was donated by Mr. Joseph Dobbin and was probably used by him when he worked in one of the Bell Island Mines. While in the mine, the light sources that the miners carried on their hats were the only light sources to be found, and the carbide lamp was one of the brightest and most popular. The lamp itself worked by filling an upper chamber with water, and a lower chamber with calcium carbide, and allowing the water to drip onto the calcium carbide. This created acetylene gas, which was then ignited using a wick that extended from the front of the lamp. The size of the flame would then be controlled by changing the rate at which the water dripped onto the calcium carbide.
Fonctions : Carbide lamps were worn by men on their helmets from 1912 to 1940 to see in the mine, as the light sources the miners carried with them were the only light sources found in the mine.
