Description : | This horseshoe was worn by the Draft Horses that were used in the Bell Island mines. Draft Horses are a large breed of horse. The horseshoe itself is rusted, with 8 holes in it, 4 on each side, so that it may be nailed to the horse's hooves. Only 1 of the 8 holes can be seen clearly however, as the other 7 have nails still in them. Of the 7 nails, only 2 can be seen hanging from the holes, as the other 5 are far shorter, and only the head of those nails can be seen in the hole. Additionally, the metal on the horseshoe itself has been raised in the front and the back, on the side that would touch the horse's hoof so that the horseshoe would not shift when the horse was walking. |
Commentaires : | Several of these horseshoes have been found in the # 2 Mine, and a few have been donated by residents. These horseshoes belong to the large draft horses were used in the mines to pull around empty ore cars and equipment to different areas of the mine as needed. The mining company had its own blacksmith shop where the shoes were made on site. On occasion, special order shoes had to be fabricated to solve a particular problem with a hoof. |
