Description : | These safety boots are a brown leather boot with a steel plate in the toe for protection. The soles of both boots are made of a hard rubber, but the sole of the left boot has deteriorated and much of it is missing. Hob nails were nailed into the soles to provide traction in the mines, and some of these can still be seen, particularly in the right boot. A metal cap was also placed on the sole of the boot at the toe, while a small horseshoe and some nails were put on the heel of the boots, to provide added traction in the mines. |
Commentaires : | These boots were found in # 2 Mine, and were first required after Confederation because most of the sick days used by the miners were due to broken toes caused by horses stepping on the miner's feet. These boots were therefore made mandatory, as the steel toe provided protection from falling rocks, dropped tools, horses, and the mining carts, among other things, while the hob nails and horseshoe that were added to the sole to provide additional traction, as sections of the floors in the mines were often very smooth and difficult to walk on. |
