Description : | A hand carved wooden whimsey, made in the form of an endless coil. Part of the whimsey has broken off, which allows the two pieces to separate when turned. |
Fonctions : | Whimseys are pocket knife carvings usually made from one piece of wood. Made during the 19th and 20th centuries, they were often carved while passing the time in the evenings or during a lunch break, using scraps of wood that served no other purpose. Whimseys amused or amazed people when they were completed; often the wow factor was trying to figure out how it was made. Chains, captive balls, fans, puzzles, and even pliers, were made from a single piece of wood - for example, a chain would consist of links like a metal chain, but would be carved and separated using one piece of wood. |
