Description : | A wood and cast iron dog- or sheep-powered endless-belt treadmill butter churn. (a) The main component consists of a wooden frame with a wooden treadmill and cast iron flywheel. A long wooden arm extends out beyond the frame, with a wooden dash attached. (b) A wooden stave dash churn. The churn is barrel shaped, held together with steel hoops. |
Fonctions : | Also known as a _dog power_, an endless belt or treadmill was operated by a dog or goat or other small animal, who would be hitched onto it and trained to turn the belt, which would turn a crankshaft driving a pitman rod that would operate a churn or some other piece of equipment. Dog powers were used a lot in the middle to late 19th century and were available as early as the 1830s. REF: _The Natural Farmer_, http://www.nofa.org/tnf/fall99/afe.php |
