Description : | The slitter is a square, unpainted wooden box. Inside, fourteen small metal pegs used for stamping dates are held in wooden holes. The box likely had a lid, which is missing. |
Commentaires : | Although its specific origin is unknown, devices such as this would have been common in offices in the early twentieth century. It was likely used to cancel stamps so that they could not be used again. The pegs would be put into a handle where they could stamp across a postage stamp, thus cancelling it. |
Fonctions : | The slitter was used by Alice Meling Payne in Cow Head's first telegraph office and post office for 34 years, beginning in 1926. It was used to date and slit money orders. |
