Description : Chippendale style chair with drop in seat upholstered in pink/gold brocade. All dowel construction except for steel screws in corner seat supports, and nails in ends of stretchers between the two side stretchers. Scallop motif on top of back rail. Condition Report: General condition is that the piece is apparently complete, sound, stable, with no distortion. The chair sits flat on four legs, the joints are tight, there is no insect damage, and only light wear, nicks, and scrapes. The finish is glossy with little wear. The wood exhibits many small nicks and darkened dents and scars. The steel is oxidized but stable. As for the silk, it is faded and weakened. Many of the green/gold threads on the green/pink motif are almost disintegrated near the front, where it was subject to increased wear.
Commentaires : Chippendale style chairs made in Newfoundland were a vernacular interpretation of the chairs designed by Thomas Chippendale of Yorkshire, England in the mid-18th century. The period of this style has been dated ca. 1750-70.
Fonctions : Chippendale chairs were traditionally made for the dining room. This Chippendale style chair was believed to be owned by John Bingley Garland, owner/operator of the Garland mercantile fishing properties in Trinity, occupant of the Lester-Garland House, and first Speaker of the Newfoundland House of Assemby, 1832.
