Description : This painting is an oil painting done on canvas of a young Bishop Fleming wearing the full Bishop's regalia, and holding a bible in his left hand. Bishop Fleming's mitre can also be seen next to the bible he is holding.
Commentaires : This painting was hung in St. Michael's Mercy Convent on Belvedere Lane in St. John's, Newfoundland. Bishop Fleming had retired to this convent when he became ill in 1849, so the nuns living there could care for him until his death in 1850. In this painting, Bishop Fleming appears to be rather young, so it is possible that it was painted in Ireland shortly after he became Bishop. This painting was found hanging in the attic of St. Michael's Mercy Convent when it closed in the 1990's, and it is also believed to be the first likeness of Bishop Fleming, from which all others have been copied. A second copy of this painting can also still be found at the St. Michael's Mercy Convent.
Fonctions : This painting was hung at the St. Michael's Mercy Convent on Belvedere Lane in St. John's.
