Pilling & Son Company, Philadelphia / was designed by Dr. Chevalier Jackson, so as to furnish a reserve circuit in case of a failure of one circuit. All three circuit / should be fitted with cords before starting endoscopy. / Pilling Lamps are interchangeable at the same setting of the rheostat so that in changing a crod from on instrument / to another there is very little risk of burning out or shortening the life of the lamp by over illuminiation. This, we believe, / a Pilling feature in Endoscopic lamps that has not heretofore been accomplished. / Testing for Electric Defects / Theses tests should be made beforehand; not when about to commence introduction. / If the first lamp lights up properly, use it with its light-carrier to test out the other cords. / If the lamp lights up, but flickers, locate the trouble before attempting to do an endoscopy. If shaking the terminal produces flickering there may be a film of corrosion on the central contact of the light-carrier that goes into the / terminal. / If the lamp fails to show a light the trouble may be in one of five places wich should be tested for in the followinf order / and manner : / 1. The lamp may not be firmly screwed into the light-carrier. Withdraw the light-carrier and try screwing it in, thought / not too strongly, lest the central wire terminal in the lampbe bent over. / 2. The light-carrier may be defective. Test cord and lamp on another carrier. / 3. The cord may be defective or its terminals not tight in the binding posts. Test light-carrier with lamp on the / other cords. / 4. The lamp may be defective. Try another lamp. / 5. The battery may be defective. Take a cord and lights up, attaching the cord terminal / at the binding post, and attach the terminals to the binding posts of the battery to be tested. / CAUTION / Do not over illuminate the lamps. They should be illuminated until the orange color begins to turn white. Dr. Chev- / alier Jackson states that a dazzling whiteness, such as is obtained with ordinary 'flashlight' is very objectionable to work / with, as well as risking shortening the life of the lamp or burning it out. A white light deceives the eye as to the color of / the disease mucosa. Never run up the rheostat without watching the lamp and always start testing with with the rheostat in / the 'off' position. / We cannot be criticized for conditions thaht might arise due to the fact that old cells are being used . / It is a well known fact that a dry cell battery will recuperate to a great extent when not being used and the initial / voltage of same when firt connected after such a period of rest is almost equal to that of a new battery, however, it dies out / very quickly, which may necessitate running the rheostat control up one or two points beyond that required for a new cell. / If the current is turned off and the battery is allowed to recuperate and then switched on again, you will temporarily / have an excessive voltage which might be in many cases sufficient to burn out the lamp. / THE CELLS SHOULD BE REPLACED WITH NEW ONES EVERY SIX MONTHS WHETHER USED OR NOT. / This will avoid all battery troubles. Don't waste time with old cells. / THE CARE OF BRONCHOSCOPIC INSTRUMENTS / Our pamphlet, [...]scopic Instruments' sent free on request . . . Should be in possession of every operating room supervision. / DIAGRAM FOR RENEWING DRY CELLS / Cells Numbered 1, 2, 3 to each Circuit / Plus (+) lead connected from rheostat (R) to centre connection of No. 3 / cell in each circuit. / Minus (-) lead connected from No. 1 binding post to outside connection / of No. 1 cell in same circuit. / Renew Cells Every Six (6)Months / BE SURE : - be sure to screw down knurled nuts firmly on each dry cell with pliers, to prevent jarring loose of the nuts. care must be taken. However, not to strip/ the threads or break the terminals.; à l'intérieur du coffret, sur le ruban adhésif : IMPORTANT: Fermer la batterie après usage S.V.P. / MADE IN U.S.A.
