Description : Totem-carved cedar,legend of Aguilar Point; Nuu-chah-nulth totem pole by Chief Charlie Williams representing the Legend of Aguilar Point. Carved totem consisting of 3 figures (from top to bottom): bear, beaver and a human. Large portions of the surface detailing has been painted: black, red, yellow and turquoise blue.
Commentaires : Legend of Aguilar Point: Twins were born to an Indian woman of the Ohiht tribe at Keeshan, near Bamfield. Twins were bad luck as they were thought to prevent salmon from running and could bring starvation to the band. The tribe killed the mother and a shaman decreed the death of the smaller twin which was buried alive under a cedar tree. Soon after a she-bear came by the tree and uncovered the baby and reared him as her own in the bear manner. One day many years later, "Bear-Man", was on the beach when he saw a creature he had never seen before. It was like himself, but walked on two legs. Bear-man followed this creature, uttering bear noises, until it joined others of its own kind. They then chased Bear-man away.
