| Description : | This photograph is enclosed in letter 2004.6.98 which is part of a bundle of letters from Korea referring to charity donations sent by Annie Sayers. 2004.6.9 was the first letter in the bundle from Korea. The black and white photo shows two views of the orphanage with some children in each and snow on the ground. Between the views is typed a message _We have thanked God for every days and your love, which give our children smiles and happiness - One snowing winter day. Suong ae Won_ |
| Fonctions : | Through CARE Canada, during the years 1958 to 1975, Annie Harris contributed to the support of orphanages in Korea. The collection houses letters from the Directors of different orphanages, photos of children and caregivers, Christmas cards, and small gifts such as embroidered handkerchiefs sent to her in appreciation of her continuing help. Annie's support included welcomed items such as a sewing machine, a knitting machine, and wool as well as food and cash. The Directors faithfully wrote expressing their gratitude and keeping Annie up to date on their crops, the school, their floods, and celebrations. Items donated by Barbara Sayers Larson. Barbara Larson is the daughter of Annie Harris (1882-1986) and Beverly Sayers (1883-1976) and granddaughter of Rather (1843-1932) and Mary (1859-1954) Harris. Barbara was born January 27, 1920 and was the youngest of three children. Barbara and her siblings, Geoffrey Sayers (1907-1997) and Dora Sayers Caro (1915-) donated Benares to the Ontario Heritage Foundation in 1968 after inheriting it from their aunt, Naomi Harris (1883-1968). Many of the items donated by Barbara originally belonged to her mother or Aunt Naomi and came from Benares. Barbara lived for many years in the log cabin originally given to her parents by her grandparents at 1723 Birchwood Drive. Barbara has recently moved to Kelowna, British Columbia to live with her daughter although she continues to maintain a close tie with the museum. |
