Fonctions : Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) is a Canadian federal Crown corporation and Canada's largest nuclear science and technology laboratory. AECL developed the CANDU reactor technology starting in the 1950s, and in October 2011 licensed this technology to Candu Energy (a wholly owned subsidiary of SNC-Lavalin). AECL traces its heritage to the Second World War when a joint Canadian-British nuclear research laboratory was established in Montreal in 1942, under the National Research Council of Canada to develop a design for a nuclear reactor. Item belonged to James Herbert Scott (1923-2012), it was displayed in his basement den on top his television set. Bert was originally from Ireland and worked for the aviation company Short Brothers in Ireland as an apprentice before immigrating to Canada during the 1940s. He would go on to write the qualification examinations of the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario to become a Mechanical Engineer in 1952. He was later hired by Avro Canada and worked as a Test Engineer in which he led the deign team for Orenda's test facility in Malton which was built in 1954. After the Diefenbaker Government cancelled the development of the CF-105 Avro Arrow, Bert was offered a job at NASA in the space program but declined. He joined Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) and began work with them in the Nuclear Power Plant Division in the Sheridan Park Research Centre in Mississauga. He worked in the Development Laboratory and later transferred to Procurement.
