Description : This grey and black machine is rectangular in shape. A small handle of black plastic is built into one side, as are small, rectangular, black feet. Four knobs on the right side of the face of the machine allow control of speakers, treble, bass, and volume. In the upper portion of the machine's face is room for two tape reels. Below these reels two rectangular protrusions encase reading and recording mechanisms. Buttons to the right of these rectangles control tape direction and turn the machine on and off.
Commentaires : A Moravian mission was first established in Makkovik in 1896. In later years, ministers studying Inuktitut were provided with language tapes prepared by Reverend F. W. Peacock, who had learned Inuktitut from Reverend Perrett. Reverend Peacock was only stationed in Makkovik for one year (1938-39), but he spent numerous years serving in Nain, Hopedale, and Goose Bay. While in Makkovik he started numerous social events, including a Boy Scouts troop and a Campfire Girls group. This machine was made soon after Sony expanded into the United States of America, establishing Sony Corporation of America in 1960.
Fonctions : This reel to reel tape recorder was used at the Moravian manse in the 1960s and 1970s for recording and playing tapes, such as language instruction tapes. It has three different recording modes (left, right, and stereo) and two different tape speeds (7 1/2 IPS and 3 3/4 IPS). It can play and record up to four tracks. This device was considered portable, although it is bulky and heavy.
